Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) Guide to Good Practice – TR/19

This is a stand alone specification for the Fire Risk Management of Grease Accumulation within Kitchen Extraction Systems. Following these guidelines we ensure that your Kitchen Extract Systems meet the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.

Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order (RRFSO) 2005

This order introduced the legal obligation for all buildings to undergo a Fire Risk Assessment. As part of this assessment, grease extract systems must be regularly inspected and cleaned to eliminate, control, or minimise any identified fire hazards. It is required that the management team and the contractor conduct regular review meetings to ensure that the cleaning frequencies are sufficient to adequately control the grease levels in line with this specification and to adjust frequencies as and when required, thus maintaining suitable fire safety.

B&ES DW/172 - Specification for Kitchen Ventilation Systems (2005)

To maintain optimal hygiene and safety, it is essential that a kitchen extract system, canopy and extract plenum are fitted with access panels of sufficient number, quality, and size to enable unrestricted access for regular cleaning and inspection of the internal surfaces and in-line components. All panels shall be in accordance with the requirements of DW/144 (2013) and DW/172.

Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992

These regulations highlight the importance of proper ventilation and cleanliness in enclosed spaces. Regulation 6 emphasises the need for adequate ventilation, while Regulation 5 specifies the cleaning requirements for ventilation systems.

Corporate Manslaughter & Corporate Homicide Act 2007

This act strengthens the prosecution's ability to secure convictions in cases involving building fires linked to poorly maintained ventilation. Maintaining your ventilation systems to the highest standards is crucial to prevent such incidents.

Fire Protection Association (RC44)

This publication provides guidance for carrying out fire risk assessments of extract ventilation in catering kitchens together with supporting explanations. It is aimed principally at the person responsible for ensuring that such an assessment is performed. It also explains the legislative background to the need to carry out and record the findings of fire risk assessments. The guidance is equally applicable to extract ventilation serving kitchens in all forms of occupancies and types of buildings

Loss Prevention Standard 2084

Catering premises shall have procedures for the containment and removal of all waste in line with all appropriate Local Authority guidance for waste management and the deposal of Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) and cleaning products.

Risk Management & COSHH Manuals

We strictly adhere to risk assessments, method statements, and COSHH Assessments to ensure a safe working environment. Our site supervisors are responsible for overseeing the implementation of control measures and safe working practices, in line with BESA's Risk Management & COSHH Manuals.

Commercial Liability/Property Insurance Policies

Property insurance policies often include conditions and warranties that specify a minimum cleaning frequency for grease extract ductwork systems. Failure to comply with these requirements can invalidate your insurance coverage. Our services help you meet and exceed these cleaning frequency standards, providing peace of mind and uninterrupted coverage.
